At the beginning of the twentieth century, the life of the Dutch workers isn’t looking good. It is especially difficult in the big cities. The workers there live in appalling conditions, on smelly canals and in small slums. The Dutch government thinks it can’t go on like this and decides that something must be done about it.

The idea for ‘garden villages’ arises. A good example is Vreewijk in Rotterdam, where decent houses with double gardens are being built. It’s all about the ideal image of ’the healthy person’, which is slowly taking shape here. Anyone who does not meet this standard is eligible for re-education.
